ANCHORAGE, AK (April 25, 2007) - GCI SchoolAccess, the education division of GCI (NASDAQ: GNCMA), is pleased to have sponsored the Iditarod Insider in Alaska Schools program, an interactive, online project that provides insider video and curriculum based on the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race to every classroom, teacher and student in the state. Through the Iditarod Insider program, students were able to view photos from the Iditarod trail, access race statistics, and follow along with the athletes, both two-legged and four-legged, via daily video updates; additionally, classrooms can continue to access the Iditarod Insider materials for up to a year after the end of the race. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, commonly known as the Iditarod, is the world's foremost dog sled race, where mushers and teams of dogs cover approximately 1,151 miles in 8 to fifteen days. GCI is now in its 14th year as the Iditarod's official telecommunications provider, hosting the Web site www.iditarod.com and providing engineering and technical assistance before, during, and after the race. The Iditarod Insider program features enhanced education materials including an extensive historic video library, standards-based curriculum lessons and projects, resource guides, grammar reviews, and collaboration information about video conferencing opportunities that connect classrooms with other villages, states, and countries. The Iditarod Insider Web site is available at http://www.iditarod.com/insider/enhanced_educational_material.html. "In addition to our commitment to education, GCI SchoolAccess also shares a strong commitment to the Iditarod, an important part of Alaska's history and culture," said Pam Lloyd, Senior Program Manager of GCI SchoolAccess. "The Iditarod is a symbol of strength and determination that every student can learn from. We're thrilled to partner with the 2007 Iditarod Trail Committee by bringing up to the minute curriculum to classrooms around the country." In addition to the Insider in Alaska program, Alaska's Bering Strait School District ran an "Iditaproject" with its student broadcasting team. The project included video conferences with schools in the lower 48 states and Alaska as well as live interviews using streaming video, pictures, and articles created by students. Students also used a special satellite sled from GCI SchoolAccess to provide access to the Internet for up-to-the minute news and interviews with mushers on the trail. The interviews and live coverage of the Iditarod were delivered via podcasts for audiences across the world. GCI SchoolAccess has a long history of providing Alaska students with exciting learning opportunities, connecting them to resources and classrooms around the world.
