Anchorage, AK (June 30, 2003) - The most isolated, rural schools in the country have found a solution for high speed Internet access with GCI. Students in the Alamogordo school district in New Mexico and Pryor school district in Montana are now connected to the Internet with the same speed and reliability as their counterparts in more urban areas. General Communication, Inc. (GCI), an Alaska-based integrated telecommunications provider, announced today that it has signed a multi-year contract to provide Internet access to these schools via its SchoolAccess® Internet service. The agreement will allow the schools to take advantage of on-line educational resources by using the high-speed Internet service delivered by GCI. The service includes e-mail, web hosting, security, network optimization, network management and content filtering services to deliver a comprehensive technology solution for school districts. "GCI is excited to add Pryor and Alamogordo school districts to our list of customers in the Lower 48," said Martin Cary, vice president of GCI Broadband Services. "We are committed to working with underserved, rural schools in the Southwest to help them meet the challenges of preparing their students for the 21st century." The SchoolAccess program was first deployed successfully in Alaska where GCI provides satellite-delivered voice, video and data services to most of the state's rural communities. Today, more than 80,000 Alaska students are connected to the Internet through GCI. GCI's SchoolAccess product provides e-mail and e-mail filtering service, a custom user interface, content filtering, a help desk, training and website hosting for more than 155 of the state's rural schools. Both Alamogordo and Pryor school districts serve rural isolated communities. There are only 130 students in Pryor and 7,000 students spread across 400 square miles in the Alamogordo school district. Tony Korwin, e-rate specialist in Alamogordo, recently moved from the Humboldt Unified school district in Prescott, Arizona. While in Arizona, Korwin worked with GCI to apply for and receive e-rate funding for his school district. When he moved to Alamogordo, he was dissatisfied with the multiple vendors the district was using for Internet service and tech support. Impressed by GCI's bundled services offering, he called the SchoolAccess team and began to implement the switch. "I am a strong believer in GCI," says Korwin. "For more than three years the company has impressed me with the services it offers with its SchoolAccess product, including filtering, email, web hosting and e-rate assistance. When I moved from Humboldt Unified in Arizona to Alamogordo in New Mexico, I knew the best way to improve the technology services in the district was to partner with GCI again." SchoolAccess is a premium Internet service that utilizes the E-rate program to enable rural schools to afford broadband access and high-quality services such as filtering, e-mail, web hosting, and network administration. SchoolAccess works closely with schools to meet their individual technological needs.
